Senior Rachel Slavik gracefully steps to the center of the football field. While firmly gripping the brightly colored swing flags in front of her body. The sound of the marching band drowns out the stadiums cheers as she prepares to perform her routine.
“I’m not a big fan of spotlight so doing a solo was really different for me,” Slavik said. “When I do my solo, all I can think about is not messing up.”
Slavik joined color guard her sophomore year. Color guard performed during the half time show using an assortment of flags and rifles. Color guard also competed in competitions throughout the year.
“Color guard definitely gave me something to do, so I was not bored coming to school,” Slavik said. “I was definitely excited to come to practice everyday.”
Color guard gained a new instructor, Renne Cantrell who made multiple changes to the team. Another challenge the team faced was the lack of experienced spinners.
“I was so used to a way of doing things and the new instructor changed everything,” Slavik said. “This is the first time I have gotten deep down in to the basics of color guard and actually gotten my technique good and have been given higher standards.”
