Taking two years to achieve her Masters degree in School Counseling, 11th grade English III teacher, Misti Kilgore, continues to pursue her dream to go into professional counseling by the end of this summer, discontinuing her job as a teacher after this year.
“Sometimes, I do enjoy counseling more than teaching when the person I counsel finds peace and joy,” Mrs. Kilgore said. “Unfortunately, counselors have to deal with many people who are hurting and we cannot do anything but listen. I am a ‘fixer’, so that isn’t much fun.”
Even though Mrs. Kilgore always wanted to be a teacher, she still looks forward to changes and challenges for the future, planning on impacting people in a positive way.
“One day I realized that the relationship part of teaching was much more important to me than the teaching part,” Mrs. Kilgore said. “I knew I needed to go back to school when I realized that, and eventually I did as much counseling after school as I did teaching during the day.”
Becoming content in her area with American literature, Mrs. Kilgore will miss teaching English. As well as becoming close to students and fellow teachers, the one thing she will miss the most from Legacy is her husband who works right downstairs from her, coach Kilgore.
“I will miss having the opportunity to sneak down to the gym to ask him what he wants for dinner,” Mrs. Kilgore said.
Mrs. Kilgore does not anticipate teaching full time in the classroom again. Even thought she will not continue her teaching career, she will not lose the love for English.
“I love, love, love to help people. I want to help others be the best they can be,” Kilgore said. “Sometimes, we all need a little direction, and I am honored to help people find their way.”
