Senior Corinna Murray hands out stickers reading “Lets Be Animals” to her friends as they walk by her on their way to class. They stick them on their binders, bags and backpacks. Some know it’s to promote the band The Downtown Fiction, others don’t. Murray smile, she doesn’t mind; they are still promoting one of her favorite bands.
“I like undiscovered bands because there’s a lot of really good music that hasn’t been discovered, just hasn’t been heard yet. I’d like to help them out and promote them,” Murray said.
Murray discovered her three favorite bands, The Downtown Fiction, The Love Light and Paradise Fears, on myspace and found other bands from them. She finds a lot of bands on the Internet and takes it upon herself to promote the bands.
“I want to help get their music out there and help their dream come true,” Murray said.
Murray runs a Texas street team for The Downtown Fiction and The Love Light and also a part of Paradise Fears’ Texas street team. She also runs the official The Love Light street team. A street team is in one area, such as DFW, and fans help promote the band in that area, online and also make promo gear such as cards and fliers. The fans will hand out fliers and hang them up at venues, music stores or other places. They also pass out demo CDs and other promo gear at concerts of similar artists, doing anything to promote the bands.
“I like being able to help the bands in any way because they mean a lot to me,” Murray said. “I want other people to listen to their music and relate and have that band be a big part of their lives.”
Murray promotes bands with band shirts, bags and with her binder covered in magazine clippings.
“I think more people should take the time to discover new bands and be more open to what music they listen to,” Murray said.
Murray also enjoys finding new bands or artists and writes down an artist’s names she sees on people’s shirts and binders, so she can look them up later and listen to them.
“I like to hear what other people are into and hear all the different bands and artists and how they are different and possibly even discover my new favorite band,” Murray said.
Murray always has a band or song to listen to and will always promote music and the artists she loves.
“Music is always there. If I’m feeling down or any feelings, there is always a song,” Murray said.
