Emily Burns

Emily Burns performed in the Legacy play, “Our Town” on October 18th.

It was dark and Emily Burns could hardly see. She heard the quiet rustle of clothing as people anxiously moved. Suddenly, the curtain pulled apart and she could see the light. There were so many people there. It seemed as though all eyes were on her and she began to go through the rehearsed motions of the scene, almost as though it was a dance. Too soon, it was over and she could hear the applause. Her applause.

Burns loves to act and spends most of her free time on stage. She performed in the Legacy play, “Our Town” on October 18th.

“I would love nothing more than to just re-live each play over and over again until the end of time,” Burns said.

Burns’ older cousin who was in musical theater inspired her to achieve her acting goals. Burns plans to stay with it until she reaches Broadway, and then on.

“She is an amazing actress and never crumples backstage in sticky situations,” actress Ashley Stevens said.

Ms. Starr, Burns’ middle school theater teacher, also thinks highly of Burn’s acting skills.

“Mrs. Starr was like a mom to me. I was always in theater, and I’d heard her brag on me a few times both to me directly and to many others,” Burns said.

Burns has helped backstage in “Anne Frank and Me”, played the nursing room scene from “Linda Jobe Christmas Show”, had the honour of being showcased in two scenes from “Life: A Series of Monologues and Scenes”, “Circle of Life”, and her last production of “The Real Scarecrow of Oz.” She is also in Mission Improvable and will be in the fall fest.

“Be open, don’t reject anything because it’s weird or pushes at your comfort zone. Don’t give up,” Burns advised.

To Burns, theater can be very stressful. It just depends on the crew and production as to how stressful. She has fun with it, though, no matter how hard or tiring it is.

“There is always something that will mess up or go wrong. The main thing is, no matter how small or big the problem, you need to keep calm because the show must go on,” Burns said.

Michelle McDaniel, Personalities Editor and LBTV Staffer
Hello! This is my second year as an editor for The Rider, and I’m very happy to be here! I do some of the art for the journalism department, too. A bit about me: I have way too many hobbies and not enough time. I like to write, edit this newspaper, collect quotes, play video games, draw, take pictures, travel, and a lot of other things. I spend most of my free time either helping out at my church, finishing my AP art projects in Mr. Mason’s room or completing and editing stories in the journalism room. I have “slight” obsessions with The Beatles and Harry Potter. Hopefully this time next year, I’ll be writing for UNT’s newspaper!   “I am determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learned that the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition.” -Martha Washington Did I mention that I love collecting quotes?
