Walking into auditions for Jungalbook wearing her combat boots and lilac pants, freshman Rebecca Goodman’s hands shake. When the director calls her name, she steps onto the stage and performs the one-minute monologue she worked on for the past week. Nervously, she takes her seat again and awaits further instruction.
Goodman discovered her passions for both clothing and theatre in 7th grade after her mother homeschooled her for three years.
“I hated [homeschool] so I begged her to let me go back,” Goodman said.
Entering 7th grade, Goodman realized her interest in fashion. She now desires to pursue a career in fashion, visual arts, or to combine her love for the two in costume design. When shopping for unique outfits, Goodman prefers thrift stores and small boutiques to the mall or a department store.
“I try to dress differently than everyone else,” Goodman said. “Sometimes I want to wear really crazy stuff.”
Aside from clothes, Goodman took a liking to acting when she accidentally got put in theatre class her second semester of 7th grade. Usually quiet and reserved, Goodman became more outgoing because of theatre class.
“I was super shy, I didn’t like talking in front of people,” Goodman said. “My theatre teacher brought me out of my shell.”
The next year, Goodman decided to take the next level theatre class. That year, her teacher wrote a musical and Goodman took the role where she had to sing two songs in front of the entire school. Goodman had never sung in front of a crowd before the musical, but found it to be a good experience.
“It was the most terrifying experience of my life, but after, I felt like I could do anything,” Goodman said.
