Tennis Season Overview

Over the net the tennis ball soars, blocking out the sun, until Mike Kodjer slams it down.  The tennis team this year stands undefeated against all foes in district play, claiming a district title against Timberview in the final match of the season.

Fourth block starts the beginning of tennis practice.  Twice a week they have a one mile time trial in which they have to beat their average time, followed by weights and then finally the tennis aspect of it all.  A few light drills to get focused, then some sparring between teammates.  Frequent practice partners and doubles partners Spencer Basham and Mike Kodjer (Currently number one and two on the team respectively) know the requirements in order to have a full and successful practice.

“In practice you just have to be at the highest level of intensity at all times otherwise you can lose focus and start to make mistakes,” junior Mike Kodjer said.

Tennis plays on a nineteen scale win system.  There are nineteen matches total during a tennis bout. If your team wins ten or more of the matches you win the bout.  The tennis teams average win ratio this year has been around the numbers of 17-2.  An average scale that exceeds all other teams in District 8-4A.  This does not just come from one individual, it takes the whole team.  Senior Spencer Basham knows the power of the team and how supportive they have to be.

“Everyone has to be on top of their game during our matches,” Basham said. “Just because you win doesn’t mean that everyone else has, so you always have to be supportive and positive towards your teammates.”

The tennis team goes into Regionals with a high state rank and a district championship under their belt.  Being there before gives the seniors on the team an edge over the competition with the experience they have from previous years.

“This is our time to shine.  Dallas and I have been with this program for three years and don’t want our journey to end at regionals, ” Basham said.
