The varsity girls’ softball team remains undefeated in district at a record of 10-0, and try to hold on to their perfect record tonight in their game against Stephenville. The girl’s have been outscoring their opponents 112-9. Some of the most notable games were the shutouts of Timberview 10-0, Arlington Seguin 16-0, and Everman 20-0. Scoring in the double digits doesn’t happen often in softball, but has become a trend for the girls’ team scoring ten or more points in eight of their last ten games.
“Once somebody gets a hit, it pumps up the whole team,” second baseman Rebecca Scarbrough said. “It’s like a chain reaction, once someone starts doing good, then the other person starts doing good and it keeps going and going.”
Although the team had won all of their games relatively with little resistance the girls faced adversity in their March 26 game against Granbury. Instead of winning by large margins like usual, they squeaked out a victory 3-2.
“Granbury was of our main competitions.” Scarbrough said. “We had to have our A-game the entire time and couldn’t lose focus.”
According to Scarbrough and shortstop Katherine Henz, this year’s success greatly has to do with the improved team chemistry and bond. Both believe that the team has finally become acquainted with each other after two years and that each player has trust in each other. They also credit Head Coach Michelle Mayfield, who according to them has assessed each player to their strong points and has set a tone in work ethic.
“She’s laid back a lot this year from last year and I think that actually helped us,” Henz said. “We don’t want to lose and let her down.”
The team is guaranteed a spot in the post season with their 10-0 record. However, Scarbrough and Henz have made it clear that they have no intention of taking it easy their last four games of the season. They plan on playing the remainder of their schedule to the fullest of their abilities.
“We don’t want to settle down,” Scarbrough said. “We have to go in and keep our A-game for the playoffs and I think that’s what we’ll keep doing through the last four games.”
