After coming off their undefeated record in district, the girl’s varsity softball team won their first trip to Area by beating Denton Ryan in two games of a three game series. Legacy won the first meeting 3-2, and the second 2-1, with Katelyn Potts scoring two homeruns to get her team the win. With the win in Area, the girls advance to the Regional Quarterfinals which begins May 15 through the 17 in Mineral Wells. Head Coach Michelle Mayfield is proud to see her team succeed in their first playoff experience.
“Playoffs are different because if you lose you go home, there is a lot more pressure,” Mayfield said. “We have to be at our best every game.”
The team adjusted to tougher competition by changing practice during the week. Mayfield says her team already possesses the talent they need and that they just need to eliminate mental mistakes. Mayfield says that practices have remained the same for the most part but emphasizes to eliminate mental mistakes so they don’t occur in the games.
“We as a coaching staff continually remind them of the importance of staying mentally focused for every game and that any one can beat you on a given day,” Mayfield said. “We have to be at our best every game, every inning.”
The girls’ play Wichita Falls in the regional quarterfinals. With all the preparation, Mayfield feels her team will win. She believes the team has done an excellent job in fulfilling goals and hiding playoff nerves.
“We have surpassed what we accomplished last year, so I’m very happy with our success,” Mayfield said. “However, we did set very high goals for this year, so I don’t think myself nor the team will be satisfied unless we reach them.”
