After a 49-14 loss to Cedar Hill in their district opener, the Broncos went into Gopher Stadium motivated and aspired to get their first win. A win less pre-season and loss to Cedar Hill put doubt in some of the Bronco fans but a convincing 55-13 win and explosive performance by quarterback Decarlos Humphry against the Gophers helped faith in the team return.
“We’ve got a lot of character,” Head Coach Chris Melson said. “We were 0-4 but our kids have practiced hard and kept their head up, and we know our whole season’s in front of us.”
A Legacy offense that averaged 14.25 in four games came out firing and nearly quadrupled their average scoring 55 against the Gophers. Legacy’s first drive went 93 yards and ended when quarterback Quentin Hasten ran it in for Legacy’s first touchdown. The Legacy defense shut down the Gopher offense on five consecutive drives forcing them to punt and turn the ball over on downs and fumbles. Early in the second quarter, starting quarterback Quentin Hasten went down with an arm injury and back-up, Decarlos Humphry stepped in his place. Humphry was a vital part of Legacy’s next offensive drive, converting two third downs and scoring on a two yard run to give the Broncos a 14-0 lead with 1:41 left in the second quarter. The Gopher offense retaliated with a touchdown of their own when quarterback Tommy Alvarez connected with wide receiver Devante Lacy for a 29 yard touchdown pass to tighten the score 14-7. But a 27 yard touchdown run by Landrum and a 92 yard interception return for a touchdown by strong safety Ian Simon ended the first half with the Broncos up 27-7.
“We started taking the ball away from them instead of them taking the ball away from us,” Melson said. “Great play by Ian to finish the half and set things rolling.”
The Bronco offense scored on its first possession of the half when running back Andrew Antia scored on a five yard run. Antia scored again on a 16 yard rush later in the game. Humphry kept up his pace scoring two touchdowns in the second half darting off for a 38 yard touchdown run and connecting with wide receiver Josh Doctson for another. Humphry outplayed his 227 yard rushing performance last week against Cedar Hill with a 274 yard rushing game against the gophers. Legacy’s defense only allowed one touchdown the entire second half, and Simon added another interception to his stats when he picked off Alvarez again in the third quarter. The game ended with a 55-13 Bronco victory. The injury status of Hasten is unknown, but Melson stressed his confidence in Humphry and his team against Midloathian.
“We believe in him[Humphry],” Melson said. “We’re proud of the way he stepped up tonight and expect great things from him.”
