With fall arriving, the tennis team started district play against Cedar Hill on September 17. The team set their expectations high despite departures of former seniors Spencer Basham, Dallas Dunn, Davey Williams, Ceci Canelos and Caitlyn Redfield. Although the team faces 5A competition, the players believe that they possess enough talent to overcome the challenge.
“I think with the loss of the seniors it shows how much harder we have to make up with them having graduated,” Senior Kristin Weems said. “I think everybody is stepping it up and we’re doing fine.”
In the cedar hill match, senior and girl’s captain, Kristin Weems won her singles match 6-0, 6-1. Weems ranks number one on the girl’s team.
“It’s an honor to be team captain” Weems said. “I lead by example. They see me working hard and it pushes them to work harder.”
Other Legacy singles victories were from Parker Anderson, Trey Henderson, Megan Henry, Spencer Toliver, and Maddie Schimming. Legacy doubles victories came from Mike Kojder/Parker Anderson and Kristin Weems/Elena Chudoba.
“We’ve been working hard,” Senior and men’s captain, Mike Kojder said. “We need to get first or second to advance to district so we’re gunning for the top.”
Legacy ended up losing their first district game 8-11. In their next 2 matches, Legacy defeated Grand Prairie 10-1, and lost to Midloathian 11-8. Mansfield defeated the Broncos in their district match the following week 15-4. However, Legacy came back the following week beating South Grand Prairie 15-4. Right now the varsity stands at 2-3 in district play and face Duncanville on November 5.
