Coming into the eleventh game of district play, the girl’s varsity softball team had high hopes for a win over the Mansfield Tigers if they wanted any chance to advance further in playoffs. Sophomore Courtney Hart relieved starting pitcher Baylee Gray after giving up seven runs. The Broncos scored five more runs to retaliate. Unfortunately, the Tiger’s lead held, ending with a 6-9 loss.
“The game was very crucial. Mansfield’s our crosstown rival and we really needed the game to help us in playoffs,” senior Becca Scarbrough said. “I’m pretty sure I cried, losing is not how I want to end my senior year.”
The team nominated short stop, Briana Walker player of the week after hitting one triple and a two run score. Juniors Daniella Romero and Canyon Samuel each hit one double, and Savannah Stech hit two doubles throughout the game.
Four days later, the team faced South Grand Prairie. Despite a grand slam by senior Katelyn Potts, the team lost their fourth consecutive game 5-6. The team’s district record currently stands at five wins and seven losses, with an overall record of 13-12 and two games left in the district play.
“We knew we couldn’t lose if we wanted to go to playoffs, so we tried to bring our ‘A’ game,” Scarbrough said. “We’ve been working on pre-game more and are more focused and confident during the game.”
For the Broncos to earn a playoff spot, they’re going to need some help. For one, the team must win out their final two games against Duncanville, whom they had beaten 15-0 earlier in the season, and Timberview, whom they previously defeated 8-2. In addition, Grand Prairie and Timberview must lose their remaining games. If the scenario plays out, the Broncos will clinch the 4th seed heading into the post-season.
“I’m pretty sure our team hopes and prays everyday, all we can do is hope we play our best,” Scarbrough said. “Our hopes are high, if we play like we can then we will do good. Since we went to state last year we want to advance again.”
