Josh Doctson (Football/Basketball)
Standing at a daunting 6 foot 5 frame and weighing 180 lbs Josh Doctson has earned his picking as the number one athlete at Legacy High school by being multi-talented in football and basketball, two sports that require a vast amount physical exertion and talent. Doctson has been on the varsity football team since his sophomore year. This past year, he led the varsity receivers with 35 receptions and was only one of two players on the team to be selected for 1st team all district. On the gridiron he does it all. He’s a guy you can’t play off of because he’ll beat you with his quick route running and at the same time you can’t play him too tight because he’ll beat you with his speed or just catch it over you. Doctson’s talents on the court were also impressive leading the team in scoring and showing off his ups with his dunks. Doctson was a pivotal reason for the success of the basketball team. The team fed off of his physical presence and leadership. Doctson’s talents attracted numerous college scouts and scholarships. Doctosn’s committed to Wyoming on a full scholarship to play football.
Tevin Mitchell (Football)
Tevin Mitchel got the reputation of being a shutdown safety for the Bronco Football team. What many people don’t know is he excels at track as well. Mitchel placed fifth at regionals in the four by 100 relay and set the school record with a time of 42.09. Having considerable football talent, Mitchel was one of only 90 athletes out of the entire nation to be selected to play in the Army-All American Bowl. He’s considered by most analysts and scouts to be the best defensive back in Texas and his skill got him offers from pretty much every college in the nation. What most people don’t understand is that Mitchel plays arguably the toughest position in football at defensive back. It’s a position that requires considerable strength in both upper and lower body, indelible endurance, quick feet, and instinctive play against opposing quarterbacks and receivers. Mitchel excels at all of the attributes necessary in being a great defensive back. Mitchell has committed to number nine ranked Arkansas University on a football scholarship. Not bad for a guy who’s only been playing organized football for three years!
Kristin Weems (Tennis)
If there’s one person to represent tennis in the top Legacy high school athletes of 2011, it would be Kristin Weems. Weems has been on the varsity tennis team since her freshman year and this past year she was elected captain of the women’s team. In her four year span of tennis at Legacy, Kristin has a 10-1 winning percentage in combined tennis matches, has only been beaten once in district, and has qualified for regionals all four years. In 2007, she was named Freshman of the Year of her district and made it all the way to regional quarterfinals in singles. Her junior year she placed third place in regionals and was named District MVP for tennis. Weems received many scholarship offers and committed to the University of Nebraska Kearney.
Blake Brown (Soccer)
In my opinion, Goalie Blake Brown was the best at his position on the men’s varsity soccer team last year. He may not be as athletic as some others on the team but Brown’s instinct and smarts at his position make him one good goalie. Brown’s had the starting job at goalie since he joined the team his junior year. Since he’s joined the team, he’s gotten known for his ability to shut the opposing team out. Brown’s reputation precedes him by being named the District 5-5A MVP for soccer; a great accomplishment with a district containing several talented teams such as Midlothian, Cedar Hill and Mansfield High School. Out of the 23 games the Broncos played this past season, Brown had 17 shutouts and averaged allowing only 0.3 goals per game. Not only was he solid in the regular season, but also clutch in the playoffs when it mattered most. In the 2010 playoffs, Brown allowed on one goal in six playoff games and in the year prior allowed only three in seven playoff games. Brown’s talent earned him a scholarship to Yale University to play goalie.
Sarah Musselman (Diving)
Musselman’s been diving for seven years. Outside of Legacy, Musselman qualified for both spring and summer nationals every year since 2006. Her dive team, GC Divers, has won Nationals for seven consecutive years. In 2008, Musselman’s talents in diving even earned her a trip to a world’s meet in Leed’s, England. Nationally, Musselman ranks 12th out of all other divers at the age of 15. Her freshman year a Legacy, Musselman made varsity and first team all-state, placing first at 4-A District Meet, First at Regionals, and fifth at State level competition. This past year, she placed first at the 5A District Meet, second at the Regional meet, and ninth at the State level competition despite suffering a back injury and the move to a tougher 5A district. Musselman’s accomplishments and talents as only a sophomore justify her spot at number five and can only show how her talent will progress over the next two years.
Derry Franklin (Basketball)
Derry Franklin has been on the varsity basketball team since his sophomore year. This past year Franklin was second in scoring on the team and made first team all-district. Franklin is regarded as the Kobe Bryant of the team and puts up at least 15 points a night. Franklin is deserving of his spot not only for the numbers he puts up, but for what he means to the team. Franklin’s hard work in practice and impressive performances in games have earned the abounding respect from Head Coach Marchie Murdock and his teammates. Most of the time, Franklin was putting up the majority of the teams’ points and whenever the team needed to comeback, it was Franklin who’d get it going by doing what he does best, scoring and getting his team fired up. Without him, it’s likely the Broncos could have been an average ball club. Franklin attracted attention from numerous college scouts and he received a scholarship to Steven F. Austin to play basketball.
Tanner Houston (Baseball)
Houston is the best all around player on the varsity baseball team. This past year Houston boasted a .286 batting average, .439 slugging percentage, and 1.000 fielding percentage. His speed and smart base running skills also earned the team 28 runs while Houston also batted in 18 more. Houston has been on the varsity baseball team since his freshman year, an achievement that no other person in his graduating class was able to do. Houston’s talents he displayed on his select team outside of school attracted many scouts and analysts and ultimately got him selected to play for Team USA in the junior Olympics the summer of his sophomore year. Houston was elected MVP of the team last in 2009 and this past year received first team all-district honors. His talent he’s displayed at Legacy and in select has earned him a full ride scholarship to Grayson Junior college.
Kole Knutson (Football/Track and Field)
Knutson has been on the varsity track team all four years of his high school career. This past year, Knutson was named Region One 5A Champion with his first place wins at district and regionals. In his region competition, Knutson broke the school record with a toss of 180’ 4.” Knutson was the first boy from Legacy to go to the State Championships in track where he placed fifth place. Knutson’s talents earned him a scholarship to Texas State where he’ll continue to throw discus.
Shelbi Vaughan (Volleyball/Track and Field)
Vaughan has been on varsity volleyball and track since her freshman year and was awarded First Team All-District honors in both sports. Vaughan has gon e to state for both shotput and discus the past two years.
Her sophomore year, Vaughan won first in discus and second in shot put. A year later, Vaughan placed first in discus and second in shot put, eve with the move to a tougher 5A district. Vaughan remains the only athlete to win first place in a state level competition. Since Legacy’s inaugural year in 2007, she remains the only athlete to be selected as an all-state track athlete. She was also a key aspect for the three consecutive years that the girls volleyball made the playoffs.
Her talents she’s displayed on her club volleyball team have earned a tryout for the junior Olympics team this summer. Vaughan’s impressive play in both track and volleyball have gotten the attention of many college scouts. Vaughan plans on choosing between Texas Tech and Texas A&M.
Briana Walker (Softball)
Since making the varsity squad in 2009, sophomore Briana Walker has been a huge addition to the varsity softball team. Her freshman year, Walker boasted a .507 batting average and .701 slugging average. Her batting talents also accounted for 14 runs batted in and her base running talents scored 22 runs and 29 bases stolen. Walker remains the only varsity softball player to make All-State, which she achieved her freshman year! Walker exhibited more improvement her sophomore year leading the team in hits with 56, runs with 38, walks with 8, triples with 13. Walker kept improved her batting average to .538 and was was named District 5-5A Offensive Player of the Year. All achievements are very impressive especially for a second year ball player in a tougher 5A District.
