Senior Ja’Leesa Giles walks back up the lane taking the time to catch her breath. Giles has grown used to practicing with her teammates, but Giles will enter the state meet by herself. GIles placed second in the 100m and 200m races at the Region 2 5A Area Meet, qualifying for state in both events.
”I know who my competition is, so I know I gotta bring my A game,” Giles said. “These girls are gonna make me work for it.”
Giles qualified in the same events her sophomore year placing fourth in the 100m and third in the 200m at the state meet. Last season, Giles qualified in the 200m and placed second at the state meet. Giles plans to remain focused and relaxed going into this year’s event.
“This year I’m hoping for first,” Giles said. “It’s senior year, I’ve got nothing to lose.”
Junior Jais Smith placed first in the 100m at region and will also be running at the meet. The Texas Relays State Meet will be held at the University of Texas at Austin from May 11 to May 13.
