Breton Hawkins, 12, explains the importance of being involved in the political process.

Breton Hawkins, Staff Writer

I’m Breton Hawkins and I’m incredibly excited to be joining Newspaper this year. I’m in pretty much everything else at Legacy, Drumline, AcaDec, Debate, UIL, Chess Club, and probably some other things I signed up for and forgot about, but I’m proud to add Newspaper to that list.

Opinion: Textbooks Over iPads

Breton Hawkins, Staff Writer
September 28, 2016

Almost every student at Legacy has an iPad. The iPads are used for all sorts of classroom functions, from Kahoot! to independent research. They are great for what they are, integrating technology into the classroom so students are better prepared for a more technological world. However, iPads are sorely...

January 13, 2016

Only a few times in your life may you come across an event that truly changes the roots of who you are. It forces you to branch out and think of yourself anew. For me, one of these events took place last month on the journalism trip to Orlando and Disney World, where magic becomes real. My journey...

Irving ISD has been in the news recently for their treatment of Ahmed Muhamed, the 14 year old who brought a clock that authorities said looked like a bomb. Criticized for their handling of the situation, which including handcuffing the boy and detaining him, Irving ISD has stated that Ahmed wasn’t...

February 11, 2016

The district has announced it will make the switch back to A/B block schedule come next school year. Currently varsity athletics, cheer and drill team will have a double block which means students enrolled in those programs would go to their extracurricular every day, instead of every other day. Worth The Crazy Hours: Why I Stayed in Band

Breton Hawkins, Staff Writer
November 6, 2015

Sometimes I think I’m crazy. Who in their right mind would ever go out on hot pavement, everyday in August for eight hours then do that for two more months for eight hours a week during the school year? Insane people - like band students. But I did it anyway, every fall for four years. And I loved...

American Democracy

Watching news about politics can be quite depressing. I see reports about stalled government, bitter partisanship and scandals. Then we have the election coverage. The issues of a possibly-corrupt campaign finance system, climate change, stagnating wages, wealth inequality, immigration, walls, the list...

Intelligence ≠ Success

Breton Hawkins, Staff Writer

Take any one of my teachers, seriously, any single one, and ask them about me. I don’t care which teacher. Ask any AP teacher about me. Ask my friends. Ask them if I’m smart. I’m positive they will tell you I am. Not to sound too conceited or anything, but I know I’m an intelligent guy. I make...

Breton Hawkins, Staff Writer
December 10, 2015

Despite strong objections from many politicians following the attacks in Paris, Obama announced he would continue with his plan to allow 10,000 refugees to enter the United States, a decision I believe was the right one. The crisis in Syria is not a new one, and goes back far further than Paris. You...

Freshman Mady Walker’s life was forever changed last February. She tested positive for MELAS: Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke like episodes. “I was kinda upset because the cases with the mildest MELAS syndrome have only lived until they’re 30,” Walker said. Walker...
