After winning first place at district, seniors Mike Kojder and Kristin Weems advanced to Regional’s in Lubbock on March 16- 17. The two defeated Southlake Carrol and Plano Central in the first rounds, however, fell short with losses to San Angelo Central and Lubbock High School, earning fourth place in the tournament.
Kojder and Weems also advanced to the quarter finals at Regional’s in mixed doubles their sophomore years. However, Weems feels they competed better their senior year because they were older and more experienced.
“I was excited because it was our second time playing together,” Weems said. “We can always hope to do better, but I’m happy with the way we played. It was a fun tournament and a fun spring season also.”
Weems was not upset about the loss to Southlake Carrol because she felt they were a level above herself and Kodjer, as for Plano Central, she feels as if they were equal competition.
“[Plano Central] was more our level, but even though they were beatable I didn’t mind losing because we had a good tournament,” Weems said.
Kojder and Weems were both team captains, and Weems believes that playing together made them better leaders. Weems hopes next years team will be able to advance to Regional’s and have a good season as well.
“Spring season has been really fun,” Weems said. “We all played well and tried our best.”
