Being in online credit recovery this semester I was able to listen to Pandora while re-learning freshman World Geography. So far while listening to Pandora I have found a lot of amazing music, some of it odd that I have never heard before. While listening to music that I knew other artists would come on the station that I didn’t know, I’d make a new station and another and another. I now have 43 stations from dub-step to rap to electronic to folk to trip hop to metal to Doris Day.
I have discovered so many interesting artists, my favorites being Portishead, Flux Pavilion,The Submarines and Massive Attack.
Portishead is one of the most interesting musical groups I have ever heard, I found them while listening to White Town radio. Their genre is considered trip hop, the most unique sound in my opinion. The singer’s, Beth Gibbons, voice is mesmerizing and along with the group’s sound, addicting. I can’t even describe their sound enough. It’s creepy with hypnotic flowing music, it makes you keep listening till you hear her voice then you are forever hooked. They are described by allmusic.com as electronic, rock, pop, gloomy, eerie and elegant. Adele’s voice can not even be compared to Beth Gibbons.
My favorite songs by Portishead are: Wandering Star, Humming, Roads and Numb.
Flux Pavilion I found while listening to Skrillex radio. Flux Pavilion is dub-step. Either you love dub-step or think it’s completely awful. I think Flux Pavilion is really good, I would recommend it if you like dub-step.
My favorite songs of Flux Pavilion: Cracks, Hold me Close and I Can’t Stop.
The Submarines are a fantastic indie pop group made up of John Dragonetti and vocalist Blake Hazard , maybe they changed their last names.Their lyrics are interesting, my favorite quote being from their song 1940, “Something’s wrong when you regret things that haven’t happened yet.” The way she sings is just fantastic but is not like Beth Gibbons voice, it’s interesting in a different way.
My favorite songs by The Submarines: 1940, Fern Beard and Brightest Hour.
Massive Attack was one of the beginning groups of trip hop. They mostly focus on their sound which, like Portishead, is dark and hypnotic. Their songs are typically very long and use different vocalists if any. They are very talented to make music that sounds great with or without lyrics. Their songs vary but all have fantastic music, I really can’t describe them well enough. When listening to Massive Attack it is like being in a trance.
My favorite songs by Massive Attack: Mezzanine, Special Cases, and Angel.
