Softball Coach Talks About Upcoming Season

Softball+Coach+Talks+About+Upcoming+Season

Throwing, catching and hitting are the top priorities of head softball coach Michelle Mayfield, as she searches for her upcoming future softball team.

Coach Mayfield prepares the girl’s softball class for spring tryouts all throughout the fall.

“I expect the players to come out and give 100% effort,” Mayfield said. “They also must be of good character, and do well academically.”

Not only will the girls be evaluated by the strength of their fundamentals, good speed and agility, but of good citizenship and consistently staying on top of grades.

“We should be very successful this year,” Mayfield said. “We have 12 returners from last year’s playoff team, so we have a lot of experience and talent.”

Mayfield follows her thirteenth year of coaching softball, and has high expectations for her upcoming players.

“My goal for this season as a team is to take one game at a time,” Mayfield said. “We hope to make playoffs and go to state.”

Training everyday last block to prepare for tryouts, Coach Mayfield is confident about her future team. Senior Kelsey Miller played softball since she was little, and tried out once again for the Legacy Varsity softball team as a returner from previous years.

“The team has worked extremely hard this fall and I think it will pay off a lot,” Mayfield said.

Following her mother’s footsteps, Miller decided to join the sport of softball at the age of six. Her mom has been by her side ever since, cheering in the stands at every game.

“My favorite part about softball is being on a team with all my friends from school,” Miller said.

As a personal opinion to Miller, softball is not just any sport for anyone.

“Softball can definitely be hard with all the little details of the sport,” Miller said. “You’re constantly learning multiple skills and once you learn more about softball, you realize it’s not one big game, skills vary depending on what happens out in the field.”
