It’s a typical game day for the men’s varsity soccer team, but the game has been cancelled so the players trench through the rain from the school to the field house where they must go through Coach Tommy Poynter’s core workouts. They know better than to think he will go easy on them. Junior Kyle Bach, along with his teammates try to have fun with the workouts.
“Ahh yeah, this feels great!” Bach said. Although described as a joker and a little on the sarcastic side, Bach practices with all seriousness. Practice occurs everyday and off season workouts are everyday during the period. With all of the practicing, expectations from the coaching staff are high.
“We’ve worked a lot on our skills and strength,” Bach said. “It has showed in the past couple games”
With the loss of graduated seniors, the lineup consists of juniors to take their place, such as Bach. Varsity level experience is expected to be gained. Players such as two year senior veteran Cody Sherwood lead by example to the new varsity starters.
“This year [Bach] has really surprised me and he’s played really hard,” Sherwood said.
Seeing as soccer season has already started, whether the team will make another playoff appearance is up for discussion. With returning senior starters such as Lane Wright, Nathanial Martinez and Sherwood, the team hopes to make another stand in postseason.
“We’re [just] as good as before,” Bach said. “I think we’ll make it to the postseason just like last year.”
