Push a lackluster football record to the back of your mind. Dismiss an early exit from the playoffs in baseball season. Even forget that there was no playoff appearance in basketball to cheer for. Leave that in 5A and join the rest of the Legacy Broncos in the 4A class.
Junior varsity quarterback Tucker Woolsey isn’t convinced the competition level will be much different.
“There is no doubt that 4A is not as intense as 5A,” Woolsey said. “But the competition is still there. You still have to work hard to pull out wins. There is nowhere to go but up.”
Many students transferred to the newly opened Lake Ridge High School, although no key players left the program.
In the midst of a offseason conditioning program, the Broncos baseball team is not taking the change lightly. They don’t want to face walking off the field after the first round of the playoffs again.
“We still have a tough district,” sophomore baseball player Cody Wells said. “With all those guys (Red Oak, Lake Ridge) our district is almost tougher than last year. We’re working hard to be successful.”
There is no doubting the work being put in and the talent level. The execution has been the problem according to Darren Adams on the basketball team.
“That needs to change if we’re going to be successful as a program now.”
All the athletic teams are up for the challenge, and hoping for new fortunes in 4A. Whether it’s a significant drop in competition or not, the slate has been wiped clean and a chance to re-label the program lies ahead for the Broncos.
