Senior Brendan Keen walks to class with a perplexed look on his face. Keen was just told by one of his friends that golf isn’t a “real sport.” Keen has been playing golf for six years now, if anyone is to say that golf is a real sport, he would be the first to say it.
“It’s frustrating to hear people say that golf isn’t a real sport,” Keen said. “To me it’s about playing the game and trying to be the best.”Some people might make fun of golfers for not “playing a real sport” or for doing something that “is a hobby”, but almost 100% of golfers say golf can be far from a hobby.
“Like any other sport, we compete with other teams, and thats what sports are all about; competition.” Keen said.
Golfers practice a lot. Keen and the rest of the golf team practice year round. On average, they practice three to four times a week. In a sport that has two main seasons, fall and spring, the team stays prepared and practices to maintain their playing ability at their best level.
“I feel like the amount of work we put in towards playing is the thing that people dont think of when they think of golfers,” Keen said.
Along with the practicing the golf team enjoys working out to stay in shape when they have the time. But Golfers who stay in shape? Yes indeed. The golfers on the team will be the first to say that staying in shape is a must.
“A lot of people say that golf doesn’t take much physical ability,” Keen said. “But its exactly the opposite, we need to stay in shape.”
This season the varsity boys golf team have put in the hours and they have great expectations. With the practicing and the workouts, the golf team expects to go far.
“I feel like if we keep our mindset right and with the chemistry our team has, we have a good chance of making it to state,” Keen said.
