Stepping into the batters box senior and first baseman Robbie Stricklin knew what he had to do to get the run across the plate. With senior Kyle Watkins courtesy running for senior pitcher Matt Dickey after a double to lead off the inning, Stricklin followed up with a single up the middle to drive Watkins in from second.
Tuesday night the Broncos faced a big rival from their district. The Summit Jaguars beat them before in tournament play, but the Broncos came out Tuesday night out hitting the Jaguars in first round of the district season. With a 5-2 win the Broncos remain undefeated in district play.
“I thought we did real well, and we fought real hard,” Dickey said. “We’re on a 6-0 win streak during district and we’re just on top of the world.”
Dickey went seven innings with six strikeouts, one walk, three hits and only one earned run. The second run was not earned because of junior shortstop Sam Mahofski making an error to allow the runner on base.
“Dickey pitched really well and was able to shut them down,” Stricklin said. “Being able to go seven innings and only allow two runs is not always easy, but he was able to stay on top of his game.”
Now that Summit is out of the way for the Broncos for the first half of district, they will have to face the Lake Ridge Eagles Thursday, March 28 at Lake Ridge at seven o’clock. In district play, the Eagles have one win against the Lancaster Tigers and five losses.
“Beating Summit was such a good feeling,” Stricklin said. Now that we have them out of our way we can focus on our game tonight against Lake Ridge.”
