With only a few yards away from a clear shot, the opposing team advances closer to Legacy’s goal. As Lakeridge mounts an offensive play in an attempt to turn the tide against Legacy, junior Ravyn Gilbert races against time to counteract her opponent. Dashing across the field to meet her adversary straight on, Gilbert chases the ball, struggling to repel the attacker. As a middle defense player, it is her job to do this. Competing for control of the field, she dives to block the shot, leaving the ball soaring in the air away from the goal.
“Oh man, nice save,” a spectator yells from the crowd. Teammates high five each other, cheering her on, “Way to go Ravyn.”
Legacy defeated Lakeridge 6-1, bringing the varsity girls one step closer to the playoffs. Gilbert knows the stakes in winning the last few games before the playoffs, and concentrates on soccer while blocking out the stress of school.
“Overcoming an obstacle [winning a game] feels amazing,” Gilbert said. “Quitting isn’t an option for me or the team.”
To keep focused before a game, Gilbert listens to music and tries to shut out all distractions.
“I like the competitive [environment], it’s very challenging,” Gilbert said.
Before every game, the team huddles together in a circle extending their right foot in, praying for success and victory.
“This is a really good year, we bond very well [and] we get together very well,” Gilbert said.
