Head Coach David Ambler surveys the game with an extreme focus. As the battle for the puck moves from one end of the rink to the other, he makes note of the things that the team needs to know in order to progress further into the playoffs.
The varsity hockey team won the Metroplex High School Hockey League Championship on March 7. The team played three games during the tournament starting with McKinney and ending with Grapevine/Colleyville.
“When a team makes a playoff run like this it certainly helps with the club morale and gains the club respect from teams around the league,” Coach Ambler said. “It also puts a target on your back for the following season.”
The Mansfield Hockey team finished the Texas State Tournament with a 1-2 record.
“There were situations in the games where we, as a group, did not have much experience in,” Coach Ambler said. “We hit the panic button a little early and got away from our game plan.”
Mansfield gave up wins to Marcus and Colleyville, but beat Leander High School 8-2.
“We were on such a roll during the city championships,” Assistant Coach Dave DePaul said. “We all feel that if we played state earlier, without missing a week of practice, we would have continued the momentum.”
Coaches planned to strengthen the team’s skill with a spring training camp on the first Monday of April.
“Although we’re losing some key seniors we also have a great group of players that should make the jump from JV to Varsity,” Coach Depaul said.
