Sophomore JV golfer Chris Stephens eyes the pin from his spot on the fairway. About 180 yards from the green, he pulls an iron out of his golf bag. Stepping about three feet away from the ball, he takes a couple practice swings nice and easy. He steps forward again and sets his feet parallel to the target, eyeing the green like Tiger Woods would. He brings the club back swiftly, and takes a solid hack at the ball, leaving a big divot behind. He watches the wind carry the ball right onto the green and roll within 5 feet of the hole, setting him up for an easy putt.
“I’ve had some good rounds and some bad rounds this year,” Stephens said. “A little inconsistent, but overall it was a solid year for me.”
The varsity team recently played in the Regionals at Water Chase in Fort Worth, but lost.
This being Stephens’ second year on the Legacy golf team, he battles for his spot on the team as well a chance to possibly play in the playoffs next year.
“We won district this year, which is always a good goal to achieve,” Stephens said. “But we lost in the regionals, so the year didn’t end like everybody wanted.”
Stephens was not on the first team in the playoffs, but played a pretty big role in getting them there with a couple good rounds.
“My best round was at Mansfield National and I shot a 79,” Stephens said. “It was a good day for me.”
Being able to hit his driver well, Stephens struggles with his short game. He wants to improve in that area to play on varsity next year.
“I want to improve all of my game, but I’m really going to focus on my short game this offseason,” Stephens said. “That way I’ll be more of an all-around golfer and be ready to play varsity.”
