The Legacy boys’ track team will take Garrett Moore to the State Track meet on May 10 at UT Austin. Moore will travel alongside senior Victoria Johnson and junior Bree Stone to the Austin competition.
“I am really excited,” Moore said. “Most people at my age don’t even get to go to state.”
Moore raced finals in the regional meet at UT Arlington and finished second, qualifying him for the UIL State Track meet on May 10. Moore, alongside senior Zavante McGriff, sophomore Gentry Ivery and sophomore David Seastrunk, helped the boys 4X400 meter relay clinch a third place win at the regional meet. The other boys, distance runners Jeff Weisheit and Jake Weith, as well as Brady Burke also qualified for finals. Weisheit placed fourth in the 3200 meter run and third in the 1600 meter run. Weith placed eighth in the 3200 meter run. Junior Hunter Carlton, unfortunately, scratched in pole vault.
“[The team] this season did really well,” Moore said. “Especially once we got to district, area and regionals.”
As for the girls’ track team, Johnson, a hurdler, and Stone, a returning qualifier in the 400 meter dash, qualified for the state meet with Moore. Johnson placed second in the 100 meter hurdles and third in the 300 meter hurdles. For her 300, Johnson did not immediately qualify for the race, as only the top two go, but she got in as the ‘wild card’, or the next fastest time out of all the regions.
“My time was pretty fast so I sort of knew I made it,” Johnson said. “Once it was secured, I took a deep breath.”
Stone placed second in the 400 meter dash and helped her 4X400 meter relay team, made up of junior Kaylei Wilde-Oliver, senior Victoria Johnson, and freshman Deja Moorehead, place sixth. Junior Maria Castillo placed eighth in the 3200 meter run. Johnson also placed fifth in the long jump and will go to start for the first time in all four years at Legacy.
“[Making] it feels great,” Johnson said. “It makes me feel like I’m going out with a bang.”
