The basketball court lights up and the scoreboards set to zero as sophomore Bethany Ross takes her position as Regular Guard and gets ready. She hears the buzzer and springs to action dribbling the ball up the court, trying to give varsity an early lead in the game.
“When I was younger I started playing basketball” Bethany Ross said “I loved the sport so much I just kept playing and playing.”
Bethany started her high school basketball career as a freshman on varsity. Now a sophomore, she still plays on varsity and will play throughout high school and college. Bethany has been playing basketball for 11 years, starting when she was five.
“I plan on using the fundamentals that I learned as a freshman and build on throughout my college and professional career,” Ross said.
Bethany received 8 letters from colleges including A&M, Texas Christian University and North Texas Arlington. In Bethany’s family the tradition has always been to graduate from Texas Tech. Bethany’s dad went there and played college baseball, her sister went there and graduated with an art degree and her brother attends Texas Tech.
“I will go to any college that will let me play with a scholarship” Ross said “As long as I’m playing basketball, I’m happy.”
After college Ross hopes to play professionally for Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). When she retires from playing professionally she hopes to be a head coach for a WNBA team, or a sports broadcaster.
“I play basketball for the little girl in me who fell in love with (basketball), I don’t play to impress people,” Ross said. “I play because I love the sport.”
