With “Legacy Tennis” in bold black and red letters on their chests and white-laced tennis shoes, the tennis team walks onto the red and green courts every day for cross-court shuffles, down the line winners, and blazing aces.
Practice like this sent them to district championships, and helped them snag first place medals in the 4A singles championships throughout several spring seasons. Hard work, perseverance and diligence have helped them to get to where they are now.
“You need to work really hard in tennis to get better,” junior Cameron Badolato said. “You always have to be on your toes.”
As for last year, a trip to regionals, and a prime performance at district have set the bar high for this year’s freshmen and newcomers.
“Incoming freshmen are expected to do well,” junior Madison Cooper said. “They’re building blocks to the future of Legacy Tennis.”
Tennis tournaments usually happen during schooldays, so players have to juggle the pressure of a big tournament and the stress of catching up on make-up work. Players wake up at the crack of dawn and sometimes don’t finish until six or seven in the evening.
“Tournaments are great because we get to bond with our teammates,” sophomore Rachel Henry said. “Getting closer to my teammates is great because they’re like family to me.”
New strings, shoes and tennis balls are all arriving soon. Varsity tryouts have ended, and the fall tennis season has just begun.
“I think this season will be wonderful because a lot of things changed for the better,” Cooper said. “The people in tennis help me grow to be the best that I can be.”
