Silence fills the room as senior Dylan Peacock picks up his trumpet. He starts to play and the trumpet’s brassy sound fills the room as Peacock gets engrossed in his sheet music. Peacock takes on the role of brass captain and all the responsibilities the title comes with this year.
“I love the challenges it holds musically, physically and mentally,” Peacock said. “Even when I was a kid, I was intrigued with music, especially the trumpet.”
Peacock started playing trumpet six years ago. He steadily worked his way up to his current position. As the captain he makes sure everyone does what they are supposed to do. He also teaches them visuals, when instructed to do so, and occasionally leads them in warm ups.
“I was nervous to try out for captain,” Peacock said. “Once I started playing, I got more and more confidence.”
To try out he had to play all 12 major scales, an etude of his choice and a compulsory etude. Overall, the tryout process happens quickly, usually lasting three minutes. This left him with time to relax and do other things that he enjoys.
“When I’m not busy with band, I play basketball recreationally,” Peacock said.
Aside from band and basketball, Peacock loves math. He plans to major in music or engineering in college.
“My advice to all the younger band members is to never stop trying to be the best you can be,” Peacock said.
