The whistle blows and nets crumple with the lash of a ball. On and off the court, volleyball coach Amanda Shingleton demands a lot from her players. What returning varsity volleyball players didn’t expect a new powerhouse coach.
In order to keep her players alert, Shingleton likes to keep them constantly moving. Ball control drills remain imperative to Shingleton, and she has made them a cornerstone in her coaching.
“It is important that we continue to build our fundamentals and remain disciplined,” Shingleton said. “My goal for the team long term is that we continue to have a successful program.”
Shingleton left coaching behind to pursue a career in the oil industry. After a year, she decided to return to teaching at Arlington Seguin High School. Shingleton now holds the position of head volleyball coach at Legacy.
“I went back to teaching and coaching because I love it,” Shingleton said. “Kids are really fun and I believe that they have a lot to offer.”
Shingleton has played her part in Legacy’s success this season. After going into district with a 3-1 record, Shingleton has gained respect from her players.
“I really like [coach Shingleton],” senior Amanda Lantern said. “She pushes us to our full potential and is a really good coach.”
Shingleton’s passion for teaching and love for her students have become apparent in the way she coaches the team. For players like junior Mandy Ramirez, Shingleton leads a role in success.
“Coach Shingleton does a good job of coaching placement and how to be smart,” Ramirez said. “She helps us to work as a team at every second, whether we’re touching the ball or not.”
