High Expectations: 5’3″ Girl Makes Varsity Basketball Team

Ask any of her fellow players on the Legacy basketball team and they will say sophomore Channa Parvin can move fast and handle the ball; they will say her height doesn’t limit her. Parvin prepares herself by working on ball handling and weaving through obstacles to work on her quickness; she must have precise movements and quick feet because of her height. Since she focused and worked on what she needed, Parvin made the varsity Legacy basketball team once again.

“Even though I’m not the tallest I still have my height to my advantage,” Parvin said. “I’m quick and can still make things happen no matter what my height is.”

Parvin works on her fundamentals whenever she can. Parvin continuously practices on her free-throws, three pointers and lay-ups at home. For this season, Parvin focuses on getting in shape and perfecting her shooting.

“Being a team player and making smart decisions is what I focused on,” Parvin said. “I showed what I can do on offense and defense by knowing the fundamentals of the game.”

The varsity team consists of 10 returning players from last year. Only five seniors return, so lots of pressure lies on Parvin to stay consistent.

“I have to work hard to keep my position,” Parvin said. “Sometimes I feel pressured because I want to be the best, and a lot is expected from me because the coaches see a lot of potential in me.”

Sophomore and teammate Bethany Ross played basketball with and against Parvin. She knows how Parvin controls the ball and how, even though Parvin’s height creates a challenge, it also gives her advantages.

“Being shorter means you can move faster and weave through everyone else,” Ross said. “I’m tall which means I can see over everyone and cover more ground.”

Last year’s team finished the season as sixth in district play. This year, the team blocks out all the negativity and focuses on improvement.

“I feel very good about this upcoming season,” Parvin said. “I think we have overcome a lot of our obstacles and I’m excited because I know this year is going to be good.”

Update: Channa Parvin is out for the season with a broken pinky.
