A Day of Softball

A Day of Softball

Laughter fills the track as the Legacy softball team continues with their fall workouts. They all know when to pay attention, yet they have fun at the same time. When they finish stretching on the track, they hustle into the field house to do their final lifting of the season.

They begin first with squats; everyone pays close attention to their partners. There are three people to a group: one lifts, the other spots and the third person does step-ups holding two 10 pound plates.

I don’t want to do step-ups,” senior Ryan Wright said. “I would rather do crunches.”

A few players wear Christmas socks because of an idea someone came up with the day before. Sophomore Ta’Lyln Moody wore sweats, but her socks are tucked into them. Others are in their workout shorts, with their Christmas socks showing for everyone to see.

“I wear my sweats under my socks because my sweats are too long,” Moody said. “It’s more comfortable this way.”

Clink sounds fill the weight room as the weight gets added on. Everyone helps out and makes sure they all do the lift correctly. They all encourage their group member as they finish the lift.

“One more, Cassidy. One more, you got it,” Nicole Moldenhauer said. “Good job, good job.”

As the workout comes to an end, all the players huddle up in the middle of the weight room and wait to hear what coach has to say. They talk and murmur, but when coach talks, they all fall silent.

“Make sure you guys eat your vitamins and get enough sleep,” Coach Waugh said. “Stay healthy.” The crowd moans in response.

Angel tree discussions fill the room as the class comes to a close. The players are split into two teams and they each have a kid to buy gifts for. The teammates make arrangements to all go shopping together after school so that they don’t get the same gifts.

“Who all is going shopping?” Wright said.

Seconds before the bell rang, coach Waugh tells the seniors to break out. The team chants together as they shows their pride as Legacy softball players. When they finish breaking out, the girls run out of the weight room and head to the locker room.

My name is Cheeks, yes Cheeks, it's not weird. I am a senior and I am the sports section editor. I am socially awkward, kind of, don't judge me. You'll grow to love me, everybody does, eventually. It's a great day to save lives people (if you don't know what that means, I'm disappointed).
