As junior Garrett Moore nears his next hurdle, he leaps, clearing the obstacle. He lands in a run and looks ahead to his next target.
Boys’ and girls’ track will be competing at the preliminary district meet on April 9. They will be competing mainly with Lancaster. Coach Bates has a positive outlook toward the rest of the season.
“I believe we have a good chance of getting a few guys to state,” Coach Bates said. “As long as we can stay healthy and focused, and a little luck always helps.”
At Texas Relays, the boys’ track team broke the previous school record in the 4×200. The relay team consisted of sophomore Michael McGee, senior Jimmy Jones, and juniors Garrett Moore and David Seastrunk. They have been preparing for the district meet since the meet.
“To prepare for the district meet as a team we are working harder at practice then we have all season,” Moore said. “As an individual runner, I work on hurdles just trying to perfect my race.”
Legacy’s relay teams all have a chance at winning district, but their weak point lies in the 110 meter hurdles. They won’t have any runners in this event, while Lancaster will have two hurdlers.
“I think we look good going into district to compete with Lancaster for the district title,” Moore said, “and possibly coming back with some district champions in individual events.”
While the boy’s team vies for spots at regionals, girls’ track coach Beckler predicts a positive results in the upcoming district meet.
“I think the girls have trained with diligence and have a great chance of placing within the top three teams,” Coach Beckler said.
According to Coach Beckler, the girls’ strong points lie in distance running, but the team is smaller, and therefore will not fill some spots that could usually be filled with point scorers. Freshman Ja’Leesa Giles is ready for what the district meet has in store for the team.
“We do a lot of relay work and we make sure to run hard every time, so that it becomes second nature,” Giles said. “You have to be mentally prepared or all of the physical preparation is a waste.”
