As the big, looping curveball froze the batter at the plate, senior Cole Hearrean had just struck out his sixth batter of the game. Minutes later, Hearrean found himself rounding second base, heading for third as he just hit a ball off the wall, scoring two runs.
Hearrean pitched every Tuesday during the regular season for the Broncos. Hearrean finished the regular season with a record of 7-0. He also contributed at the plate as many runs were scored because of his timely hitting.
“I know that I have to lead this team and I want to show a good example to all of my teammates,” Hearrean said. “I’m not a very vocal leader so I try to show it through my actions on the field.”
The Broncos play on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Midlothian High School against Red Oak for Regional Quarterfinals. The Broncos were rewarded Area Champions when they beat McKinney North over the weekend. Hearrean and his teammates know the work and dedication it takes to make it as far as they are.
“I love the playoffs because the atmosphere is something that can’t be described,” Hearrean said. “I know that most people get stressed out during the playoffs, but I enjoy and try to have as much fun as I can because I realize how hard it is to make it as far as we have made it.”
The Broncos have had, what most people would call, a solid season so far, winning district and earning a top ten ranking in Class 4A. Hearrean’s leadership and performances lead the team to an unforgettable year.
“No matter what happens in playoffs, I will be proud of my teammates and coaches,” Hearrean said. “I have had a great senior year and I will keep the memories of this year with me forever.”
