The thought of summer comes with images of swimming pools, ice cold drinks, and sleeping in every morning. However, no amount of sleep will keep anyone cool. When you’re on your way to work, the heat isn’t increased or decreased based on your lack of homework or increased laziness. Here are some things that anyone can do to beat the heat of Texas summer, while also staying healthy and active.
Stay Hydrated
Drinking a lot of water will help prevent heat induced dehydration. Drinking plenty of water also benefits human health.
Wear Loose Fitting, Light Colored Clothing
While lighter colors absorbs heat, darker colors absorb much more in a lot less time. Loose fitting clothes give more room for air, which will also keep the clothing material a bit cooler.
Keep a Spray Bottle in the Refrigerator
Fill up a spray bottle with water and put it in the refrigerator. When you go outside, you can spray your face for a refreshed feel when the heat gets too harsh.
Alter Your Workout Schedule
If you get out and run, you should consider running in the morning or in the evenings, when the sun isn’t up and the heat isn’t at its peak.
Keep a Fan
If you can’t have a small electrical fan, get a battery operated pocket fan. They’re easy to use and can keep you a bit cooler when you’re standing around at work, at an outdoor activity, or simply laying around at home.
Keep a Hat
If you must be outside, take a hat along. You can pour ice or cold water into the hat to keep your head and face cool.
Swim
Swimming provides exercise, fun and a way to keep cool. You can even buy water balloons and battle with a friend, play with the water hose, or simply throw buckets of water at each other.
Eat Cold Snacks
Cold treats, such as ice cream, popsicles, or even refrigerated fruits.
Wear a Wet Shirt
If you plan on doing yard work, or simply work outside, then wearing a wet shirt will keep you cool. The wind will cool the shirt down and refresh you.
