Even though it might amaze some people, but, here at Legacy, there is such thing as sports other than football. Yes, I know it’s shocking, but it’s true. Actually, some of these other, somewhat hidden sports might even be better than the football team. Our school is made up of a group of students, called the student section, who seem to think football is the only sport that needs fans.
Don’t get me wrong now, I enjoy going to the football games and cheering our boys on, It’s just that I would like the same type of support for my sport, softball, in return. Even though football isn’t on their winning streak right now, they still have fans, including myself, come to every game. When football season is over, school spirit shuts down, until basketball season begins.
Basketball is the next big sport everyone supports. Students dress up when they attend the varsity boys home basketball games. Everyone stands on the small area of bleachers, that look like their about to break, in their costumes and they even make up cheers to get the rest of the crowd pumped up for the game.
Enough about football and basketball, our cross country team is actually really good. They even made it to state last year, and still to this day some students don’t even know that. They did, however, get a state send off, but, it was optional for the teachers to take their class down to send them off for their state meet. Even though cross country isn’t a fun and entertaining sport to watch, like football or basketball, they still need the same type of support as every other sport needs and deserves.
The next sport everyone goes to watch is baseball. Baseball seems to be everyones favorite sport. Yes, I understand that players from the team attend football and basketball games, but so do the softball girls, and the tennis team, and the cross country team, and the golf team, the swimming team and yes, rodeo too. Every sport needs the same type of support as students show for football and basketball.
A look in the past, my freshman year, 2013-2014, the varsity softball team made it to the fifth round in playoffs, and we had very little support from the student body. Everyone focused on baseball, even though they didn’t make it as far as we did in the playoffs. Yes, I know softball is not the most interesting sport to go and watch, but it still makes us, as a team, feel supported when our school shows up to our games. I know baseball and softball play home games on the same night, so that means people should be able to switch between games and support both sports.
I guess what I am trying to say here is that every sport deserves their support, no matter how boring it might be to sit in the stands and watch. When athletes from other sports come and watch games, I think that shows that they are interested in that sport and have enough school spirit to take time out of their day to go and watch their school play, and they deserve the same for their sport.
