Hot cocoa, warm blankets, family and a good Christmas movie; the recipe for a perfect way to spend a cold December night. Whether you want to watch an old movie or a cartoon, many options are available no matter what your mood.
BEST FROM THE 90’s
Home Alone-1990
“KEVIN!”
The hilarious and touching story of a young boy being left at home holds a nostalgic place in many people’s hearts. Macaulay Culkin shines as the biggest child star of the 90’s because of this holiday favorite.
BEST CARTOON
A Charlie Brown Christmas – 1965
“Merry Christmas Charlie Brown!”
Snoopy and Charlie Brown come together with the whole gang to discover the true meaning of Christmas through lots of dancing and an iconic tree. Vivid colors and a jazzy soundtrack make this cartoon one of the best.
BEST OLDIE
White Christmas – 1954
“We came up here for the snow. Where’re you keepin’ it?”
1950’s fashion and music brought to life in this warm movie centered around four heartfelt characters, among them Rosemary Clooney (George Clooney’s mother) and Bing Crosby. This one can definitely be described as “an oldie but a goodie.”
BEST NEW
Christmas with the Kranks – 2004
“We’re here for Frosty.”
Based on the book “Skipping Christmas” by John Grisham, this comical movie shows how a community reacts when a couple decides to go on a cruise and not “do” Christmas. Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis star as this scandal-causing, hilarious couple.
BEST SERIES
The Santa Clause 1,2 and 3-1994-2006
“It’s Santa! You killed him!”
The Santa Claus series shows how a normal dad becomes Santa and all the challenges that follow. From getting married in The Santa Claus 2, to facing Jack Frost in The Santa Claus 3, Tim Allen plays an a jolly Santa as well as a loving dad. The unfortunate part: movies one and two are good, but I’m not so much a fan of the last one.
BEST STOP-MOTION
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer – 1964
“We’re a couple of misfits, that’s where we fit in!”
The laughable stop-motion of this version of Rudolph’s story certainly does not detract from the spirit this movie has. Featured in this classic film are songs that you will have stuck in your head for days.
MOST QUOTABLE
Elf – 2003
“Buddy the Elf, what’s your favorite color?”
Will Ferrell plays the lovable and naive elf named Buddy who falls in love with Jovie, played by a blond Zooey Deschanel. This newer flick has turned into something so memorable with characters that feel so real to us all.
MOST UNIQUE
The Nightmare Before Christmas – 1993
“Forgive me, Mr. Claus. I’m afraid I’ve made a terrible mess of your holiday.”
Another one of Tim Burton’s artistic and creative masterpieces, “Nightmare” stands as a clearly different take on a traditional Christmas movie. Slightly eerie, this movie slightly falls under the Halloween category, but really it works for Christmas as well.
LONGEST
It’s A Wonderful Life – 1946
“Teacher says, ‘Every time a bell rings an angel gets its wings.’”
Ok, you have to admit, this is a really long movie (runtime: two hours and fifteen minutes). But something inside compels you to sit down and watch it every year. That scene at the end just gets you every time. And you love it.
