Junior Sarah Haslam walked in through the cafeteria doors with her bright blue homemade dress billowing out behind her. She spent the past week sewing it just for this night: banquet.
Haslam usually spends her time on more than just creating outfits for herself. In fact, she occupies herself with a wide assortment of activities, all the way from knitting to knife throwing, and everything in between.
“I like to keep myself busy,” Haslam said. “I find a project and finish before I start a new one.”
Generally, she starts a new project as soon as she finishes an old one, whether it be sewing stuffed animals, writing, making jewelry, or working on the long list of handmade Christmas presents for her friends, which she must begin in June to complete.
“Writing is probably the thing that comes most naturally to me,” Haslam said. “Everything else I have to work at.”
Along with individual activities, she also participates in team activities, such as Venture Crew, band and theater.
“I’m good with both individual and social activities,” Haslam said. “I’m good socially, and I don’t get lonely when I’m alone either.”
But this many activities and projects can take up a large portion of her time between practicing and actually participating, even when she works quickly.
“Band and theater don’t have the best relationship schedule-wise,” Haslam said. “They interfere with each other from time to time, and each specific project can take a while. It just depends on how complicated it is.”
She bases her busy schedule off of which events carry the most importance, and attends as much as she can.
“I’ve yet to come to a situation where both events are equally important,” Haslam said. “For example, if the thing that’s happening in band is more important, then I’ll go to the band thing.”
She has never considered stopping one activity or another for more time or any other reason. According to her, all of them have different “perks.”
“I could just stop doing it all, but that wouldn’t be productive,” Haslam said. “I like to feel like I’m accomplishing something.”
