The Legacy swim team nears the end of their season while competing in the District 8-5A Championship meet on January 23. Swim Coach Tony Tullbane looks forward to the rest of the season with pride in the team.
“It was a good meet,” Coach Tullbane said. “We are going to rock [regionals].”
Boys and girls compete separately and teams score points based on how swimmers place in their events. Legacy boys scored 199 points and took home first place while girls scored 122 points, taking home second. Senior Brandon Bernal tied for first in his 100 yard freestyle and will advance to regionals with 22 other team members. Bernal will also qualify for the state swim meet if he wins regionals.
“This year’s team I feel like is more connected than the past years that I have been here,” Bernal said. “I am very excited for being able to get the chance to go to State my final year in swimming.”
The team will compete at the regional meet on the weekend of February 7. Coach Tullbane predicts nine to 13 of the regional competitors will qualify for state which will take place on February 20 and 21.
“[It has been] a great year with such a great bunch of kids,” Tullbane said. “It’s not about the speed all the time, it’s about the team.”
