As I walk into the varsity gym, the sound of basketballs bouncing on the hardwood fills the air. It was the beginning of the first Bronco Basketball Madness at Legacy High School. The JV and varsity basketball teams were on the court having a shoot around as the audience got settled. There were about 50 or more people in attendance, mostly friends and family of players.
The event begins with JROTC presenting the flag as a couple of choir members sing the National Anthem. Afterward, the school cheerleaders and Silver Spurs perform followed by Mr. Mike Robinius, or Mr. Robo as the people he’s subbed for like to call him, claiming that he wants the basketball team to win the state championship this year.
“I believe this group of kids has the potential to win the 2016-17 state championship, and they will,” Mr. Robinius said.
Following this, the JV/Varsity basketball players for both girls and boys were introduced one by one, alternating between boy and girl. Then, there was a team three-point contest in which two players from both girls and boys were put on one team, and their combined points determined their score. They were broken up into four teams and the top two teams went on to face each other in the final. Afterward, players chose two audience members to compete against each other in their own three-point contest.
The next event was a dance competition to decide the judges for the next event, the dunk contest. The final event was a dunk contest between the boys’ players. In the first round, the players were allowed an unlimited amount of dunks and had to impress the judges who would pick 4 finalists. The following round would’ve been the last round, however, seniors Brandon Reeves and Phillip Smith tied in the final round and had to go into overtime. In the overtime, Smith came out on top. After the event was over, the parents of players stayed back to eat pizza, talk to coaches and their children and everyone else left.
