True Colors: Legacy Raises Money for Debora Espinoza During LUCK Week

Legacy’s LUCK week will involve helping Debora Espinoza, a student at Erma Nash Elementary, starting the week of April 5. Student Council chose Life in Color for the theme, with each day having its own color. Legacy will kick off the week of activities with a 5K Color Run, a race that raises money for the Espinoza family and involves a colorful mix similar to paint being thrown at runners.

“I think LUCK Week is a fantastic event we do,” Student Council member and senior Kyle Dragulski said. “It’s a blessing as a school to have an opportunity to help underprivileged families.”

As a toddler, Espinoza was diagnosed with a slow-growing brain tumor. The tumor affects her vision, requiring ongoing treatment. Student Council hopes to raise enough money during LUCK Week to provide Debora with an art studio playhouse in her backyard that she can share with her three siblings.

“We want to improve a kid’s life,” Dragulski said, “and by doing that, we help get the school involved in the program, and we raise as much money as possible for Debora.”

Legacy partners with A Wish With Wings, an organization that helps Texas children to fulfill their wishes, to help Espinoza and her siblings obtain their dream of an art studio playhouse. Excess funds from fundraising will go towards helping pay the family’s medical bills.

“We’re planning some unique things [for this year’s LUCK Week],” Data Specialist Stephanie Bonneau said.

LUCK week will include the Color Run on April 5, a Mr./Mrs. LHS Contest on April 7, a talent show, a Mission: IMPROVable show dedicated to LUCK Week and a new event to Legacy known as Stop the Music. This new game, Stop the Music, will happen during passing periods throughout the week.

“I’m a little panicked about how close it is,” Bonneau said. “We are hoping for a great year this year and to raise more money than we did last year.”

Chick-fil-A will host a Spirit Night every evening from Monday, April 5, to Friday April 11. Twenty percent of the proceeds from visitors who mention Legacy or LUCK Week will be donated to the cause. The other scheduled events are listed below:
