Under the Sea: Prom Set for May 24

Senior Autumn McGaha walks out of the USA store at the Grapevine Mills Mall, her plastic-covered, light-blue prom dress draped across her arms. The collar on her neck makes up for the sleevelessness and a sheer, beaded over-skirt covers the shortness bottom of the dress.

“I’m not too concerned with finding a date,” McGaha said. “I’m just looking forward to going and having a fun night.”

Prom will be held on May 24 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Omni Hotel in Fort Worth. Tickets cost $90 April 21 – May 9. No tickets will be sold after this time. To purchase tickets, students must first be cleared of all fines and fees. Tickets can be bought from Ms. Shackelford in her classroom during passing periods and before or after school. Students will receive a receipt upon payment which they can use to pick up tickets beginning May 19. Each senior may only buy two tickets, one for them and one for their date. If their date does not attend Legacy, a guest form must be filled out by May 16. Forms are available in Ms. Nicole Kidd’s office.

“I think it’s going to be wonderful,” senior class sponsor Stephanie Shackelford said. “[Prom committee has a really cool idea. The theme is Under the Sea and we’ve never done that one before.”

The prom committee planned the event all school year. After a discussion and a vote among the committee members, the theme Under the Sea turned out to be the favorite, chosen over several others such as Arabian Nights and Emerald City.

“[The prom committee] thought it would be more magical,” prom chair Kelsey Rombach said. “The colors are prettier.”

Throughout the year students have been selling boxes of chocolate and bags of suckers to raise money for prom tickets. For every box or bag sold, students earn a coupon worth $10 toward their ticket. Coupons can be picked up in Shackelford’s room.

“They’ve helped a lot because they can really bring the cost down,” Rombach said. “Even getting $10 off with a bag or a box of chocolate helps a lot.”

Legacy will also keep its tradition of hosting an After Prom. The venue has moved from Legacy to The Main Event in Fort Worth. After Prom will begin at midnight and end at 4 a.m. Starting in May, students can purchase their tickets for $20 Tuesdays and Fridays at the PTSA cookie table. Students do not have to attend prom to attend After Prom. Senior Mikaylan Thomas expects After Prom to be a highlight of the evening.

“I’m mostly looking forward to After Prom because of unlimited pizza, arcade games, laser tag [and] bowling,” Thomas said. “It’s going to be really fun.”

Rombach hopes that all the anticipation and preparation will pay off on prom night.

“I just hope that everyone has fun,” Rombach said. “I want everyone to make it a night that they’re going to remember.”

Hey guys, I'm Madison. This is my second year in newspaper and I genuinely hope that I can carry on writing interesting stories. I'm quiet and shy, but when you get to know me, I can be a little crazy, maybe even fun. I enjoy a variety of activities such as track, reading, writing, eating and singing. I am definitely not opposed to trying new things or trying to make new friends. While I have a fun side, I also have a serious side that never seems to talk or joke around. I see myself as a hard worker and try to get things done as soon as possible. This year will be fun. I can't wait to spend another year putting smiles on everyone's faces. Hope you all have a wonderful school year and enjoy The Rider Online. [email protected]
