While focusing on running the curve harder as he received the baton, senior Gentry Ivery, ran the second string of the four by two relay race in the Area Track and Field Championships along with Garrett Moore, David Seastrunk and Michael McGee.
The Track and Field team competed in the Area Track and Field Championships at Lancaster High School on April 23 and advanced to the 5A Region II Championships on May 1 at the UTA Mavericks Stadium. The four by two team won 2nd place in area.
“The week before the race, Coach Bates told me to run the curve harder, so that’s what I was mainly thinking about before the race,” Ivery said.
Getting to state has been the main goal for the whole team year round, and they’ve put in extensive hours of after school practice helping them to prepare for regionals.
“Individually I’ll do pretty good and the last few days of practice I’ve fixed the small things I need to fix to be successful in regionals,” Moore said.
“This whole season, Coach Bates has been doing a good job preparing us in practice making sure we run hard,” Ivery said. “We are pretty prepared.”
Garrett Moore’s falling from district his sophomore year really motivated him to make a strong return this year and potentially make state due to the team’s close relationship.
“As a team we’ll do well because of the team atmosphere and the chemistry between us is the best it’s been in the last few years,” Moore said. “It’s one of those accomplishments that shows all of the hard work I put throughout the year pays off and people recognize that you’re one of the top athletes in the state.”
