In a Student Council meeting, Parker Brown and Amanda Haddox persuade other Student Council members as to why they would be best for planning and organizing this year’s Pink Fest event and both end up being awarded the title “Pink Fest Committee Head”.
This year will be the first year current freshman and sophomore students will experience Pink Fest since in 2014 Pink Fest was changed to U2FC. The purpose behind changing was to include awareness for all cancers instead of just one. However, some felt that changing U2FC to Pink Fest wasn’t the best idea.
Senior Parker Brown is a true supporter of Breast Cancer awareness. After his mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, he learned how it didn’t only affect her, but the people around her as well.
“Having a close experience with breast cancer definitely [made me] want to help people going through this,” Brown said. “I think it’s really important to tell people about what these women go through on a day-to-day basis and how strong a they have to be to face something like this.”
This year, Pink Fest will be hosted on Saturday, Nov. 7. The event will start at 2:00 p.m. and will conclude at 11:00 p.m. later that night. There will be carnival games and a variety of other games such as a new event to Pink Fest, slip-n-slide kickball. Towards the end of the event, there will be a glow-up, where student’s can dance, listen to music and hang out.
Also, there will be a powder-puff tournament and walking teams. If you are interested in joining either one of these, please see Mrs. Daniel in B101, the Student Council room. To help support Breast Cancer, all the money raised from Pink Fest t-shirts and from the Pink Fest event will be donated to the Moncrief Cancer Institute.
“Pink Fest is my favorite event at Legacy,” Brown said. “Last year when we decided to do U2FC, I thought it was a cool idea that we were giving to all cancers, but I guess Pink Fest was just always a tradition here at Legacy.”
Junior Amanda Haddox feels the same about how great it is to have Pink Fest back and is overall anxious to see how much money will be raised.
“It’s a tradition,” Haddox said. “It’s what we’ve always done before U2FC and it’s definitely gonna be a good time.”
November 7 will certainly be a big day for Parker Brown, and he said wants to show the freshman and sophomores what Pink Fest is all about.
“Seeing my mom go through breast cancer, I can really relate to the survivors and fighters and it’s just something that is close to my heart,” Brown said. “It definitely puts more of a want to help people because you see how it affects the people you love. It’s not just affecting the people who are diagnosed, it affects their whole family, their friends, and everyone around them.”
Legacy’s Student Council put together a YouTube video about PinkFest. You can find this here.
