Every year, Legacy students participate in one of the most popular school events of the year, LUCK Week. Also known as “Legacy United through Caring and Kindness,” LUCK Week focuses on helping someone in the community by raising money and bringing joy to someone who’s been through a hard time.
This year, Legacy will focus on helping Christian, an eight year old boy who has multiple health conditions. Christian was diagnosed with a condition known as Chiari malformation which is when the brain tissue extends into your spinal canal, he has fluid on his brain and also has Klippel-Feil syndrome, a rare bone disorder characterized by the abnormal joining of two or more spinal bones in the neck.
Christian also has deformed shoulder blades, scoliosis and a tethered spinal cord. He has had three surgeries on his brain in the past year and also had spinal cord surgery in which they fused his spinal cord to his skull.
Mrs. Julie Daniel, the Student Council sponsor, will help host her first LUCK Week ever. When she first found out about LUCK Week, she loved the idea of Legacy students giving back.
“I am so excited to see our students support someone in need,” Mrs. Daniel said. “I think it’s a great reflection of the heart of our student body.”
To help raise money for Christian and his family’s medical bills, there will be multiple events going on during LUCK Week, the week of February 29. Throughout all lunches, there will be speakers set up to where students can pick songs to play by donating money. Also, on Friday there will be a pep-rally, in which Christian will attend, that costs $1 to be apart of. On Saturday, March 5 at 6 p.m., there will also be a movie night in the Legacy gym to support Christian.
Students and the community are encouraged to attend spirit nights at local restaurants as well.
Tuesday (March 1) – Chick-Fil-A
Wednesday (March 2) – Cane’s
Friday (March 4) – Chick-Fil-A
If you eat at one of the above restaurants on the listed day and mention you are there for LUCK Week, they will donate a portion of your purchase to Christian.
Garrett Brantley, the Student Council president, will be helping run the LUCK Week events. He mentioned that the purpose of LUCK Week was to provide awareness for the candidate’s diseases or problems and to assist their family in expenses.
“I hope that we can bring our candidate’s family a moral and financial boost as we did last year for Brooke and her family,” Brantley said.
Mrs. Daniel also set up a GoFundMe page for Christian, which can be accessed here: https://www.gofundme.com/luckweek2016 LUCK Week shirts will also be on sale for $10 at the Student Council store. During the week, each day will be a dress up day as well.
Monday – Pajama Day
Tuesday – Beach Day
Wednesday – Superhero Day
Thursday – Purple Out
Friday – Wear your LUCK Week Shirt
“I think the importance [of raising money for Christian] is to relieve some of the financial burden from his medical bills – with three brain surgeries last year and one more this year, the medical bills probably seem never ending,” Mrs. Daniel said. “I’m excited to see what we can do this year.”
