As one of the original eight members of Pie Club, known as the “pieoneers,” senior Mia Williams meets with her club every Thursday after school in the second floor AP office wth their sponsor Ms. Corina Pena. Every week, a different member provides the club with a homemade pie, utensils and milk or ice cream.
“It’s something to look forward to during the week,” Williams said. “I honestly think it’s pretty funny because everyone thinks it’s a joke, but we’re serious.“
Pie Club founder senior Haleigh Carr was inspired by her older brother’s engagement in Pie Club at his former job at Bell Helicopter.
“One day my brother said to me, ‘Haleigh, it’s your senior year, start pie club at school,’” Carr said. “And so I did.”
Pie Club acts exclusively. They currently have eight members and will only add eight new members at a time to ensure even pie distribution among members. Pie Club will be adding eight new members in November. Meetings usually last 15-20 minutes and members eat together, make pie puns and talk about their week.
“I like [the club] because I like pie, first of all,” Williams said. “Second of all, it’s cool because I’m in it with people I don’t know so well, so I’ve made new friends.”
Pie Club also has specific guidelines for an acceptable pie. All pies must be round, have a bottom crust, and the filling must be distinguishable from the crust. Pie fillings cannot be similar to bread, and the pies must hold their shape at room temperature for at least an hour. These rules are set in place to ensure that the dessert delivered fits the standard definition of pie.
“It’s pie club, not dessert club. You have to prevent accidents like people bringing in cookies or cakes. Also, you don’t want a meat pie incident,” Carr said.
They even have key terms, such as “piecrastinate,” which refers to buying a pie from the store because one ran out of time to make one. Similarly, a “pietastrophe” the designated word for when a “Pie Boy” forgets to bring pie on their designated pie day.
“I love pie club and everything about it. The quirky terms and index that are supposed to be serious are what makes pie club so clever and unique,” Carr said. “It’s not like any other club at Legacy. Plus, who wouldn’t want to “pietake” in delicious pie every week?”
