Favre Packed his Bags

During the summer, my aunt called and told that the world had ended because Brett Favre had flown into Minnesota to sign with his longtime rival and my favorite team the Minnesota Vikings.

At first, I was in shock; I thought that she was joking. She’s the joking type. However, just to confirm what she said, I double checked what she had said; I hurriedly checked the NFL website to see if it was indeed true. To my surprise, the headline did say “Favre, Vikings begin negotiations”. I was surprised and exited at the same time. I was shocked because when he had “retired” after last season with the New York Jets I believed that he was indeed done with football. I was excited because Favre would give the Vikings a quarterback with cannon of an arm as well as the experience to lead an inexperienced team. Furthermore, the addition of Favre would finally not make the team one dimensional and having to rely on the NFL’s best running back in Adrian Peterson.

I knew it would be interesting to see what kind of chemistry Favre and the offense would have.  At first, I believed that he would be throwing almost 300 yards per game. However, through Week 7, Favre has averaged 240 yards per game. Favre has indeed taken pressure off Adrian Peterson who is averaging 98 yards per game.

With Favre’s experience and strong arm, I knew that the wide receivers would have more passes thrown their way. Two receivers I knew would benefit from Favre were: rookie wide receiver Percy Harvin and third year receiver Sidney Rice. Harvin, a stellar return man has been a consistent target (23 catches, 2 TDs). Rice has been Favre’s deep threat (16.5 yards per catch).

Signing Favre has been a good move for Minnesota who hadn’t had a consistent starting quarterback since Daunte Culpepper in 2003. I’m looking forward to seeing the Vikings in the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

Coming up on Sunday will be Favre’s first visit to Green Bay’s Lambeau Field not wearing a Packers uniform and also his first since the 2007 NFC title game against the New York Giants. I can’t wait to see the fans reaction to seeing their longtime hero in their longtime rival’s uniform.
