The softball and baseball teams hosted the third annual kickball tournament on Saturday, Dec. 5 to raise funds for their programs. Fourty teams participated in the one day tournament. Softball and baseball reached their goal of raising $4,000 with softball raising about $2,100 and baseball earning approximately $2,500 after expenses.
“The games were very competitive and all participants had a great time,” Mrs. Kay Tamakian said.
The Diamond Girls won the best uniform award for the second year in a row. The Mad Dogs, captained by Lance Bartee, championed for the recreational division. In the competitive division, the Scrubs, captained by junior Andy Jacobi and Tanner Houston, 11, won first place the second time in three years.
“It may seem silly to some, but we take great pride in winning best uniform,” the Diamond Girls said. “The award could really be named spirit of the game.”
According to Mrs. Tamakian, Diamond Girls team member, there were a few good laughs at the tournament. One being when Andy Ritter’ mom dove for the ball off the foot of Salvador Munoz’s younger brothers foot. Also when Tanner Houston’s mom, Chris, did the splits when she slipped going for a ball kicked by Mrs. Shelly Burkett.
“But overall, it is about having fun,” Mrs. Tamakian said.
Nevertheless, softball and baseball had a goal to reach. With the money the softball team earned, they plan on covering their hitting tunnels with turf. The baseball team wants to use the money to help players have a great season. According to Coach Mayfield and Coach Walden, they reached their goal.
“It was a huge success,” Coach Mayfield said. “I think everyone seemed to have a good time.”
