What to Watch

Every spring television shows have season finales that leave cliff hangers in order to keep their viewers anticipating their next season. During the summer, several students anxiously waited for their favorite television shows to return in the fall.

When fall arrives, the wait ends and anticipated questions are answered.

Glee
During the week of big premieres, Glee had 12.3 million viewers according to TV Nielsen Ratings. Glee has had only one complete season. The creators of Glee have the ability to rearrange songs that have been around for several years in a way that still appeals to teens of today. Garcia considers herself one of Glee’s biggest fans.

“Glee is my all time favorite show. I’m the biggest ‘gleek’ ever. I love how diverse the music is and how each number is so theatrical,” Garcia said. “I also love when they incorporate singers like Lady Gaga, Madonna and Kristen Chenoweth to make an episode more exciting.”

Law & Order SVU
“In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. These are their stories.” These opening lines intrigue Garret Weaver,12, as the suspense overwhelms him.

In Law & Order SVU cast members act as detectives with the New York Police Department, NYPD, solving special victim cases mainly pertaining to rape. Law & Order SVU has received the highest rating out of all the Law & Order series, making the drama series a top watched show on NBC. The series had over nine million viewers on it’s eleventh season premiere on September 22.

“It’s interesting,” Garret Weaver,12,said. “I think the assistant District Attorney [Maiska Hargitay] is kind of hot and the story lines are generally good.”

Wipe Out
ABC’s hit show, Wipe Out, was voted by Entertainment Weekly’s readers as reality television’s guiltiest pleasure. Challengers compete to be named ‘Wipeout Champion’ and for a grand prize of $50,000. To win, contestants must compete in a series of obstacle courses against 24 other ‘newbies’. Each round competitors must complete qualifying rounds in the shortest amount of time in hopes to advance  to the finals.

New courses include double cross, the pitch fork, the blob, the smack wall sweeper, the fence flapper, pirate’s revenge, the medieval wipeout and more. Creators are unsure as to what they are, but ensure the will result in a wipeout.

“You get to watch people get the snot beaten out of them for your own amusement,” Karsten Cravey,10, said.

Psych
Pysch, one of USA’s most prized shows, comes on USA with an average of 3.6 million viewers, according to TV by the Numbers. Psych is about a crime consultant, James Roda, as Shawn Spencer, who  pretends he is psychic so he can help solve case with his best friend, Dule Hill, as Gus Guster.

While growing up Shawn starting noticing small details that most people don’t notice. Over time he started giving policemen tips that made them suspicious of him actually being involve in the crimes. When Shawn could not find a job he decided to help the police by pretending to be psychic and although nobody believes him, the policemen still take his advice because he’s usually right on target.

“The situations the main character gets in are funny,” Taylor Lambert ,10, said. “ I don’t watch televsion that much but when I do I watch Psych. The acting is also pretty good.”

The Daily Show
The Daily Show has won won nine Emmy’s for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy series and Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Series, according to IMBD. The host of the Daily Show, Jon Stewart, gives his opinion on current events and interviews celebrities. Guest stars include Ben Stiller, Governor Mike Huckabee, and Bill Gates. The Daily show comes on Comedy Central during weekdays.

“Jon Stewart has the ability to be genuine as well as sarcastic,” Ian Cook,12, said. “Jon Stewart is the most sane voice in American media.”

Supernatural
Supernatural was nominated for two Emmy awards in 2006 and 2008. The show is about two brothers who perform supernatural activities ending in the death of one of the brothers. However, somehow, the dead brother comes back to life. Supernatural was one of the only shows to survive the merge of UPN and the WB and comes on Fridays at 9/8c on the CW.

“It’s a great show! It’s entertaining and there’s nothing like it,” Donovan Armistead, 12, said. “ I love the episode where the babylonian whore comes up from hell and pretends to be a prophet and condemn as many people to hell as possible.”

Desperate Housewives
Desperate Houswives won two Golden Globes and two Emmy awards. Desperate Housewives begun its seventh season on May 18. The plot is centered around neighbors in the fictional town of Fairview. Each season a new mystery arises as the four housewives strive to uncover the secrets hidden within their lives.

“There’s always drama between men, money, and killing people,” Alana Miller,11, said. “I love the drama.”

Criminal Minds
Criminal Minds had 14 million viewers during its season premiere, according to zap 2 it. Criminal minds is about a team of pro-filers from the FBI that solve murder cases that deal with serial killers. Criminal minds focuses on the criminal more then the crime  itself and is on its sixth season. The popular TV show is now one of the most watched television shows on TV. The writers lure viewers in with suspense and keep them watching with shocking twists.

“I like the drama aspect of it and how they piece together the case and solve the murders,” Sarah Larabee,12, said.

Jersey Shore
Jersey Shore was the most watched show on cable television during the summer, according to tv by the numbers. The MTV reality television series follows eight housemates spending their summers together. As of July 20, MTV announced that the entire cast, with the exception of Angelina, would return for a third season.

“It’s the be shows ever! My favorite episode is when JWOW and Sweetheart get in a fight because Angelina was talking about them behind their backs and they found out. There’s a lot of fighting about relationship drama,” said Aaron Ogundipe. “Vinny is my favorite because he’s a different and more unique then everybody else in the house.”

Vampire Diaries
Vampire Diaries is the supernatural fantasy horror based on a series of books written by L. J. Smith.The series follows the life of Elena Gilbert, who falls in love with vampire Stefan Salvatore, and soon finds herself caught in a love triangle between Steffan and his older brother, Damon. Producers renewed the show for a second season, which premiered on September 9, 2010. According to TV squad, Vampire Diaries won seven teen choice awards

“Vampire Diaries is nothing like Twilight! It’s kind of realistic,” Rachel Slavic said. “I like the actors and I love Damien’s facial expressions. My favorite episode is the season one finale.”
