HOSA students hosted the Carter Blood Care Blood Drive on Dec. 15, resulting in 108 sign-ups and 10-15 walk ins. Despite sign-ups scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, all of the spots were filled by the end of the first day.
Whether confident or nervous, students left campus and waited patiently to have their blood taken.
“I’m not really bad with needles, so I wasn’t nervous,” junior Emily Hall said. “It only hurt when they first stuck the needle in, but if it saves three lives it’s worth it.”
Unlike Hall, senior Eric Ramos wasn’t so lucky to have his blood taken in and orderly fashion.
“When they stuck the needle in blood squirted out everywhere and even got on my shirt,” Ramos said. “I don’t know what went wrong, but I would still do it again for sure.”
Senior BerryJean Day also had some trouble in the donating process.
“They had a hard time finding one of my veins, so they called a supervisor over and he found one, even through he said it would cause a little swelling later,” Day said. “It’s something I’d definitely do again though. It’s an awesome experience.”
Despite any challenges for donation blood, the student body is eager to volunteer again next year to save more lives.

It’s normal to have some complications in a blood drive donation, but most people usually have good experiences. However, seeing each students after they were done and feel great about saving 3 or more lives made my day. Some were really nervous but most admitted that it was worth it in the end. I’m glad that I’m a part of Ben Barber’s HOSA and was able to help out at the blood drive yesterday. The generosity that Legacy had was amazing and I didn’t think that we’d have to say all our appointments were full. I’d like to thank all the students, staff, and any public walk in that came and made a major impact on someone else’s life.
