Bulletstorm, created by Epic Games and developed by People Can Fly, delivers the action to you with a neatly wrapped kick to the face. You play as protagonist (using the word as lightly as possible) Grayson Hunt through his trek for redemption and revenge.
Introduced very early in the game is the ability to kick people and the leash. The first time you kick or leash an enemy, it prompts you to do so by slowing down time and telling you to basically go crazy. When an enemy is kicked or leashed, he is put into slow motion for a brief moment allowing time to plot how to make the last few seconds of his life interesting; a premeditated fun fest of mass destruction. If in the right environment, electrically charged objects, man-eating plants and explosives are on that list. The leash also lets you pull enemies out from behind cover making them vulnerable to anything and everything imaginable, and in this game, imagination goes a long way.
The arsenal supplied in the game is interesting in design and use. Bulletstorm gives you anything from a bazooka that launches spinning drills to a sniper rifle with remote controlled bullets. Every weapon has a charge mode making each one more entertaining and more powerful than it already was. Creativity is key, and with the charge modes it’s way too easy to be creative. By far one of the most epic aspects of the game is using charge shots to take down several enemies at a time. Whether it’s freezing time and guiding a previously hit enemy into another one then detonating or causing a blast that launches enemies sky-high and then picking them off, there are wonderful combinations of insane action and take downs that are made possible.
Now for the best part of the game, skillshots. Bulletstorm uses skillshots as a way to examine the players performance and awarding them with points for, well, taking down enemies in spectacular and hilarious ways. The points you obtain from skillshots let you buy ammo and charges at dropkits to continue the onslaught of humans and mutants. There are secret skillshots that are revealed during boss battles, skillshots for every weapon, and just general skillshots with no particular subject matter all usually pertaining to a humorous matter.
The gameplay has its pros and cons. There isn’t a lot of cover sometimes when you need it the most, and everything resembling cover goes up to about your waistline. Seeing how high the cover is, crouching does not always help and I constantly find myself being shot while behind cover.. There is no jumping in the game, but given the arsenal you have it does well at balancing out. There is no online verses, but in multi-player you and friends can work together to take down the enemies in very close relation to Gears of War’s Horde mode. There is also excessive amounts of blood that erupt from enemies making the game very gory. The story is strong, the gameplay is fun and the laughs are endless. It has a moderate replay value too so it won’t just end on you.
